In 1974, Barry Winterbourn, Managing Director of the Winterbourn Group, decided to sell his successful air-conditioning company in Port Hedland and relocate to Perth.

Barry and his Mother purchased ten acres of land in Huntingdale and began a business producing plant seedlings, which initially traded as Melvelle Nurseries.

The nursery grew rapidly and quickly reached production of 40,000 plants annually. The company built lasting relationships with large clients, including Coles, Woolworths and Bunnings. Barry’s wife, Veronica was a microbiologist by trade and discovered and developed an entirely new plant, marketed as Philodendron Xanadu. This developed into one of the most successful foliage house plants across the world and its leaves became an important part of the florist greenery trade.

Shortly after, Barry and Veronica established Environmental industries. Beginning with only three employees, a single tip truck, and one utility vehicle, the company secured its first contract with the North West Gas Shelf. The company quickly expanded and completed several recreation areas, landscaped offices, commercial properties and approximately 600 houses before being contacted by the West Australian Overseas Project Authority to work with a number of entities in the Middle East on proposals for major landscape projects. Environmental Industries now employs more than one hundred staff members and is equipped to complete high quality projects for its commercial and industrial clients across Western Australia.

In 2012, The Winterbourn group created a sub-division devoted to seedling development, called The Seedling Factory. The Seedling Factory encompasses forty acres of land and currently produces fifty million seedlings per year for forestry, ornamentals, rehabilitation projects and vegetable growers.

More recently, the Winterbourn Group started ThinkWater, Canning Vale. ThinkWater Canning Vale has been very successful in providing irrigation systems, supplies, and servicing for clients in sports, gardens, parks, and corporate and industrial properties. The company’s vision is to become Western Australia’s leading supplier of innovative and integrated solutions to the water services sector, which deliver maximum efficiency and certainty to our clients.
